COVJAM COMPETITION WINNER: COVENTRY CITIZENS IN THE DRIVING SEAT FOR THE CITY'S FUTURE

The winning idea from a competition held within the recent 3-day online city-wide CovJam will be now turned into reality by Coventry City Council. Derek Nisbet's idea, from one of over 2000 posts within the CovJam, is for a painted blue line to guide people from the railway station to the city centre.

L-R: Martin Reeves, Chief Executive, Coventry City Council, Derek Nisbet, winner of the CovJam competitionDerek said, "I'm thrilled that my idea's been taken seriously; I think it shows practical ideas from local Council Tax payers are being listened to and that they can become reality. I'm looking forward to seeing the blue line created and I'm sure I'll feel proud to know that it was my idea".

In what has the potential to become a blueprint for cities around the world, Coventry City Council held the world's first city-wide online conversation with nearly 900 local residents, businesses and public bodies. With support from IBM, the interactive forum was named CovJam. Participants debated ways Coventry could attract inward investment, sustain employment in the local area, personal security and how quality of life could be improved for all the city’s inhabitants. Jammers came up with, then voted on, low cost ideas that could be implemented quickly.

Apart from Derek's great idea of the tourist guide, Coventry City Council is looking at these other ideas from the analysis of the jam posts to see how many more can be turned into reality:

· Putting more trees in car parks across the city

· Greening up existing waste ground across the city

· Holding more public events/markets in city-centre open spaces
