Improving quality of life for Coventry residents and narrowing the ‘gap’ between priority neighbourhoods and the rest of the city lies at the heart of our city’s Community Plan. Measuring how successful we have been in doing this has, for the last three years (2003-2005), involved an extensive survey of Coventry households alongside data gathered from official statistics.
Some 1200 households each year have been involved in our survey and this report provides an analysis of how we are doing so far. It provides numerous examples of year-on-year improvements in residents’ perceptions of their quality of life, as well as evidence that the ‘gap’ between priority neighbourhoods and the rest of the city is narrowing. At the same time a number of key challenges still remain and these are also highlighted in the report.
Introduction
This report presents the key findings from the Quality of Life Household
Survey undertaken in 2005 and identifies trends from the last 3
years annual data. The survey was commissioned by the Coventry
Partnership to track opinions on quality of life in neighbourhoods.
The survey specifically aims to identify whether or not quality of
life is improving for those living in priority neighbourhoods. The
findings will be used to assess whether Partnership Groups are
doing enough to improve quality of life and services in both the
city and in priority neighbourhoods.
It should be emphasised at this stage that the first survey
(undertaken in 2003) took place in August/September, whilst
subsequent surveys have taken place in December. There are some
instances where the differences in findings between surveys are
large. Given the quality of life issues being investigated findings
are bound to fluctuate and may indeed vary from week-to-week. It is
important to take care in interpreting and generalising from
results until sufficient data has been collected to draw trends
(3-4 years). It is intended that future surveys will be conducted
during December of each year.
The survey was partly funded from Neighbourhood Renewal Fund grant
and partly from contributions from partner organisations including
Henley College, Coventry City Council, Coventry Teaching Primary
Care Trust, Job Centre Plus.
