RESIDENTS JOIN FORCES TO TACKLE CRIME AND ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR IN THEIR NEIGHBOURHOODS

Residents in Coventry are taking to the streets for a week of action to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. Thousands of people up and down the country are joining forces with crime-fighting professionals for a week of community action.

“Not in My Neighbourhood Week”, which runs from Monday 2 to Friday 6 November 2009 aims to promote what is being done locally to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and encourages the police, public services and communities to work together to keep our streets safe.

Resident organisations, Neighbourhood Watch, and a range of local agencies from across Coventry are leading the efforts to inform local people of what is being done in their area.

Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety, Cllr Andrew Williams said:
“We can only tackle crime and anti-social behaviour by working together and that’s what Not in My Neighbourhood Week is about.

“An enormous amount of work is being done every day to make communities safer and when people see this for themselves, it in turn makes them feel safer and encourages them to get involved.”

In over 80 areas across England and Wales, local residents can get involved in activity that is being taken in their neighbourhoods to tackle crime and disorder.

Examples in Coventry will include:
• The Community Safety Partnership bus located in different neighbourhoods providing support, advice, reassurance and information

• Multi-agency Street Briefings taking place across the city

• Multi-agency Walkabouts taking place across the city

• A range of prevention work in relation to fireworks/bonfires

The Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPT's) will take the young people to these locations with digital cameras on 6 Nov (11 Million Day) and they will take images of issues of concern to them; they will build these into a mini presentation for a community safety orientated partnership meeting on 20 Nov. The young people will also think about what sort of action is needed to improve the situation as they find it and they will influence the recommendations are put into the final version of the report from the meeting on 20 Nov. Partners will pay for lunches for the young people involved in taking photos on 6th - to help them engage and support their building of an effective relationship. Partners will also pay for lunch after the meeting on 20 Nov.
